Tips on Saving on Funeral Costs

We often talk about the cost of living but rarely about the cost of dying. Given the taboo around death, it's not surprising. But as funeral directors, we need to do more to educate families on navigating end-of-life so that they can avoid unnecessary expenses.

While there is much work to be done, I wanted to share a few tips to make this hard time easier and more affordable for even one person reading this article.

Ask for Fees Upfront
Did you know 63 percent of people don’t ask for a quote before deciding on a funeral provider? Know that it’s your right to ask for this and a breakdown of fees: never feel pressured to say yes before having this information. 

Consider a Memorial Service
While a traditional funeral is best for some, many don’t realise there are other options. Memorials -  typically held after a cremation - can relieve time pressure, allowing you to avoid costs that often come with making quick decisions.

Or No Service At All
Many families opt for a direct cremation with no service. In fact, two in five Australians say they want their ashes scattered without any ceremony.

Prepay Your Own Funeral
Paying for your own funeral can alleviate the burden for your family later. This can be cheaper than funeral insurance or bonds as the cost is calculated on today’s price and doesn’t increase over time. 

And one last thing that would help us all be more prepared?

A simple conversation.

Families that have discussed their funeral preferences tend to experience reduced stress and are less likely to pay for unnecessary services. Imagine the change we could drive if we all had that chat with a loved one this week?
